Can I use VNet for any other services?


You can only use VNet in Microsoft Azure for connecting virtual machines and Cloud Services. At the time of this writing, other Azure components do not benefit from VNet.

How do you create a VNet?

There are multiple ways to create a VNet — the two most common methods are to use the Azure Management Portal or by using a virtual network configuration file, which is an XML file. You can also use PowerShell commands or the Azure Command Line Interface (CLI).

Can I use a Public IP address range in VNet?


Yes. You can define the address range as either public or private. The address range can only be reached from inside the virtual network, interconnected virtual networks, or from any connected on-premises networks. The following address ranges can not be added:

  •     224.0.0.0/4 (Multicast)
  •     255.255.255.255/32 (Broadcast)
  •     127.0.0.0/8 (Loopback)
  •     169.254.0.0/16 (Link-local)
  •     168.63.129.16/32 (Internal DNS, DHCP, and Azure Load Balancer health probe)


How many virtual networks can I create in Azure?

There’s no limitation. You can create as many virtual networks as you need. It is important to remember though that you can create virtual subnets only in the Private IP Address range and they must not overlap.

Can I use all the IP addresses of a virtual subnet?

Azure reserves the first four addresses in each subnet range. For example, you cannot use .1 as the last IP address of a virtual subnet. There are also a few IP addresses that are reserved by the Azure Cloud services. IP addresses in the subnet address range are limited to one resource at a time.

Can I ping the default gateway address of a virtual subnet?

No, you cannot ping the default gateway address of a virtual subnet.

Does VNet support Layer 2?

Virtual Networks in Azure only support Layer 3 overlay networking. So you cannot bring your own Layer 2 VLANs in Azure.

Can I create custom routes?

Yes. It’s possible to create customer, user-defined routes to route traffic between subnets. This can be used to override Azure’s default system routes or to add additional routes.

Can I use multicast or broadcast modes in the virtual network?

Virtual Networks can only work in unicast mode. Multicasting and broadcasting functions are not supported by VNet.

What all protocols are supported by VNet?

Azure virtual networks support TCP/IP, UDP and ICMP protocols.

Can I add additional subnets to a VNet?

You can always configure additional subnets in a virtual network.

Can I change the virtual network or subnet of a virtual machine in Azure?

You cannot do so. You must delete the virtual machine and then assign it to a VNet of your choice.

Can I modify VNet configuration?

You can modify subnet configuration. For example, You can add, remove, expand or shrink a subnet if there are no virtual machines or services deployed within it. You can do this by using PowerShell cmdlets or the NETCFG file. You can also add, remove, expand or shrink any prefixes as long as the subnets that contain the virtual machines or cloud services are not affected by the change.

Can I modify my subnets in Virtual Subnet?

You can modify subnet configuration as long as there aren’t any virtual machines using these subnets. However, you cannot modify a subnet once virtual machines and services are using that subnet.

Can I deploy a Web Server in a VM and have it accessed over the Internet?


Yes. All services deployed within a VNet can connect to the internet. Every cloud service deployed in Azure has a public IP Address assigned to it. You will need to configure the necessary endpoints to enable these services to accept connections from the internet.

Can I use IPv6 in Azure Virtual Network?

Yes. VNet can host applications with IPv6 and IPv4 connectivity. Most networks for mobility and Internet of Things (IoT) are built or transformed on IPv6.

Can a virtual network span regions?

No. Virtual Machine networks are created in a single region. You are only allowed to select a single region when creating a virtual network. However, Global VNet peering allows you to peer VNets in other regions.

Do virtual networks talk to each other?

VNets do not talk to each other by default, but if you need to allow communication between different VNets in Azure, you can use REST API or Powershell commands to do so. There are a few things you need to take into consideration before connecting two virtual networks in Azure, though. For example, you must not use the same IP Address range or virtual subnet in both virtual networks.

How many DNS Servers can I configure in a VNet?

You configure a DNS server name in a VNet so when a virtual machine initializes it configures the DNS server in the TCP/IP property. You can configure a maximum of 12 DNS servers in a virtual network.

I changed my DNS server on the virtual network. Will the virtual machine receive the new DNS server configuration automatically?

You must restart the virtual machines if you need them to receive the new DNS server address. Please also note that virtual machines must be restarted in order to receive the new DNS server address and the Ipconfig /renew command does not work.

First of all you need full control over your internet connection. So if you are in a form and just use the dorms internet it wont work.

Assuming you have full control you can open inbound ports in your router. If you serve your files on port 80 you have to enable inbound port 80. Which basically means turning of your routers firewall for that port. There might be a firewall on your computer too. Needles to say you need to turn it off. Your computer will now be accessible by the internet. As I said if you are in a hotel or something like that you won't be able to access their routers config without credentials. You need to keep in mind that your computer needs to stay on and that you don't have a domain yet. You will only be able access your site via IP. Just google “what is my ip” and you will know your ip. BUT depending on your provider it might also change. Sometimes on a daily bases.

Now comes the good part. I actually did it ones and I was glad that I couldn’t access my dorms router. Some years later I worked on an university web project and hosted the website on the internet. It was a linux system and you have a command to see who tries to log n on your computer. There where like thausands of failed requestsevery single day. Because the internet is full of bots that are scanning every single ip adress in the internet and also every typical port, like - you guessed it - port 80, but also 3306 (MySQL), 21 (FTP), 22(SSH) and so on…

They are also using different approaches to access your computer. For Instance, you use xampp for website hosting which is only for development but still a lot of people try it either way (like me). The Hacker knows about newbies and uses xampps security issues to access your computer. He might then install ransomware or worse use your computer as file sharer for illegal stuff like child pornography. You would never ever notice it unless you check your traffic, cpu and disc usage on a regular basis. But noone does that. In the eye of the law you are the culprit because your computer is the distributor.

DNS COMPONENTS

The Domain Name System (DNS) was developed primarily to allow humans to use more easily remembered character strings in place of dotted decimal or, heaven forbid, hexadecimal numbers. You can enter a destination's numeric IP address into a browser or other application and get the results you would expect without any contribution by the DNS. Once the system was in place, however, it took on a number of supplemental roles that have stretched and contorted the system far beyond the original intentions of its architects. The DNS is an essential component of Internet based e-mail. It can serve as a repository for encryption keys and other security components. Currently, it is undergoing expansion that will integrate IP addresses with worldwide telephone numbering.

DNS COMPONENTS:
The DNS consists of three components. The first is a “Name Space” that establishes the syntactical rules for creating and structuring legal DNS names. The second is a “Globally Distributed Database” implemented on a network of “Name Servers”. The third is "Resolver" software, which understands how to formulate a DNS query and is built into practically every Internet-capable application.

(A) Name Space:
The DNS “Name Space” is the familiar inverted tree hierarchy with a null node named "" at the top. The child nodes of the root node are the Top Level Domains (TLDs)-.com, .net, .org, .gov, .mil-and the country code TLDs, including .jp, .uk, .us, .ca, and so forth. Node names, known as labels, can be as many as 63 characters long, with upper- and lower-case alphabetical letters, numerals, and the hyphen symbol constituting the complete list of legal characters. Labels cannot begin with a hyphen. Upper- and lower-case letters are treated equivalently. A label can appear in multiple places within the name space, but no two nodes with the same label can have the same parent node: A node name must be unique among its siblings.

(B) Name Servers:
The second key component of the DNS is a globally connected network of “name servers”. Each zone has a primary or master name server, which is the authoritative source for the zone's resource records. The primary name server is the only server that can be updated by means of local administrative activity. Secondary or slave name servers hold replicated copies of the primary server's data in order to provide redundancy and reduce the primary server's workload.

Furthermore, name servers generally cache data they have looked up, which can greatly speed up subsequent queries for the same data. Name servers also have a built-in agent mechanism that knows where to ask for data it lacks. If a name server can't find a domain within its zone, it sends the query a step closer to the root, which will resend it yet a step closer if it can't find the domain itself. The process repeats until it reaches a TLD, which ensures that the entire depth of the name space will be queried if necessary.

The combination of all the DNS name servers and the architecture of the system creates a remarkable database. There are more than 32 million domain names in the popular TLDs for which the whois utility works. Nominum, whose chief scientist, Paul Mockapetris, invented DNS, claims that there are more than 100 million domain names stored and that the system can easily handle 24,000 queries per second. The database is distributed-no single computer contains all the data. Nevertheless, data is maintained locally even though it's distributed globally, and any device connected to the IP network can perform lookups. The update serial number mechanism in each zone ensures a form of loose coherency on the network-if a record is out of date, the querier knows to check a more authoritative name server.

(C) Resolver:
The third component of the DNS is the “resolver”. The resolver is a piece of software that's implemented in the IP stack of every destination point, or "host" in IETF-speak. When a host is configured, manually or through DHCP, it's assigned at least one default name server along with its IP address and subnet mask. This name server is the first place that the host looks in order to resolve a domain name into an IP address. If the domain name is in the local zone, the default name server can handle the request. Otherwise, the default name server queries one of the root servers. The root server responds with a list of name servers that contain data for the TLD of the query. This response is known as a referral. The name server now queries the TLD name server and receives a list of name servers for the second-level domain name. The process repeats until the local name server receives the address for the domain name. The local server then caches the record and returns the address or other DNS data to the original querier.
